Self Tape 401 - Week 1

Welcome to your Takeda Technique Self-Tape 401 workshop. We’ve had quite the journey together. I’m excited to share this one with you, adding a few old-but-new wrinkles.

Let’s start things off with some homework. (Come on…you knew this was coming.)

  1. Click on the link below to download your side. And speaking of old-but-new, you should recognize this script.

  2. Prepare this like you have an actual audition.

  3. Choose either the Sam or Alex role and self tape it. Choose your best take.

  4. For a breakdown, let’s assume this is a series regular role for a new NBC work-place comedy similar to “The Office” or “Superstore.” These are more subtle life-like comedies, so for tone, ground your performance, but keep up the pacing. You can have beats of silence, but fill them with thoughts and opinions.

  5. Also shoot a full-body slate. Say your name, height, where you have representation, and what you hope to learn in the 401.

  6. Edit the audition into one file, starting with the slate followed by your best audition take. (MOV, MP4, M4V accepted)

  7. Label the file PROJECT_ROLE_FirstName-LastName (i.e. WEEK1_SAM_Jane-Smith)

  8. Email a downloadable link to your self-tape file to scott@talktothecamera.com Use a file transfer site like Hightail or WeTransfer. (Do NOT use YouTube or Dropbox.) All file sizes must be less than 100 MB.

  9. Due by NOON (PDT) two days prior to your workshop. (Bonus points if you get it in early. Do NOT be late.)

Your Week #1 audition side

Just like the 101, I will be sending you a link of everyone’s work a day before our first workshop. Same rules apply as all the 101 and 201 classes, you are to review everyone’s self-tape.

Here’s what’s new: I will give you an evaluation, but you are also the evaluators. (Shock! Gasp!) Focus on whether each person brought something unique to the performance. The goal of each week is you all deliver amazing self-tapes, and you all deliver something very uniquely you to the performance.

Wait! There’s EVEN more. As always you have some required reading. In the 401, we’re going to be discussing the reading a lot more in class. All are focused on what we will be learning in Week 1 (the state of our industry, how you can stand out).
