Self Tape 201 - Week 2
Now that we know our “technicals,” this week, we are focused on story and how to show that in your self-tape. You have two self tapes: one short and one longer. Both are REAL sides from actual projects. Here is the first one (a one line scene):
Click on the link below to download your side. This is for Universal Pictures’ “Fast and the Furious 8” later titled “The Fate of The Furious.“
Please read the Super Jet Tech role. The breakdown is as follows: Working directly for Cipher (Charlize Theron) this super jet tech is at her side to complete any task she asks. When operating radar, TECH sometimes has to inform her of news…including bad news…5 lines, at least 3 scenes
Choose one of the three scenes to tape.
If you do more than one take, edit them together, so you are only sending one file.
No slate.
Instead, place a TITLE CARD (name, role, and agency name and phone number) at the END OF VIDEO. (A title card is just text, so you can shoot a piece of paper with this information, or you can create a text graphic in your edit system.)
MOV, MP4, or MV4 files.
Label the file FirstnameLastname-ROLE-agency (i.e. AlexTrebek-SUPERJETTECH-TheAgency).

Here is the second scene, from the pilot of NBC’s “This Is Us.” Like last week’s scene, I’m throwing the kitchen sink at you. Use this to practice the skills we learned.
The breakdown is: CASEY – Any gender, ethnicity. Powerful showrunner of Kevin’s multi-camera sitcom. In any other universe, Casey’d be a schlub, but on a successful TV series, Casey is the big boss, ridiculously rich, and very much in control – GUEST STAR
One take only. No slate. No title card.
Label the file FirstnameLastname (space) ROLE (space) height (i.e. VannaWhite CASEY 5-5)
Email a downloadable link of both self tape files to your teacher’s email address. Use a file transfer site like Hightail or WeTransfer. (No YouTube or Dropbox).
All file sizes must be less than 175 MB.
Everything is due by NOON (PDT) two days prior to your class. (Late submissions only allowed with casting permission.)
Here is some more viewing/reading to supplement this week’s lesson about storytelling. Enjoy!
